Understanding Golf Handicaps

A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's potential ability. It allows players of different skill levels to compete on an equal basis. The World Handicap System (WHS) is used globally to calculate handicaps.

What is an Adjusted Gross Score?

An Adjusted Gross Score is your actual score after applying specific adjustments according to handicap rules, but before calculating the handicap differential.

  • Start with your actual total score (the total number of strokes taken during a round)
  • Apply the "Net Double Bogey" maximum per hole: Par + 2 strokes + any handicap strokes you get on that hole
  • This prevents extremely bad holes from overly influencing your handicap

Example: If you're normally a bogey golfer but had one hole where you scored a 10, that single bad hole shouldn't dramatically affect your handicap. The adjusted gross score would cap that hole to keep your overall handicap more representative.

How to Calculate Your Handicap

  1. Enter your adjusted gross score for each round
  2. Enter the course rating and slope rating for each round
  3. Add between 3 and 20 scores (more scores = more accurate handicap)
  4. The system will automatically calculate your Handicap Index using the WHS formula
